Descended from a long line of Bedfordshire artists Stannard was invited to paint the gardens and woodland at the Queen's estate, Sandringham in Norfolk. Queen Mary was a patron of his from the 1920's.
Two of Stannard's watrercolours of the River Dart were hung in the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours. Stannard is best known for his garden paintings, and paintings of country landscapes.
